Errors in Simple Climate Model Emulations of Past and Future Global Temperature Change

چکیده

Climate model emulators are widely used to generate temperature projections for climate scenarios, including in the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Change Sixth Assessment Report. Here we evaluate performance of a two-layer energy balance emulating historical and future from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models. We find that emulation errors can be large (>0.5°C SSP2-4.5) differ markedly between models, forcing scenarios time periods. Errors arise near-surface response both greenhouse gas aerosol forcing; some periods due these forcings oppose one another, giving spurious impression better emulator performance. feedbacks assumed constant emulator, introducing time-varying or state dependent may reduce prediction errors. Close emulations produced given period but, crucially, this does not guarantee reliable other Therefore, rigorous out-of-sample evaluation is necessary characterize

Past and future polar amplification of climate change: climate model

34 Abstract Climate model simulations available from the PMIP1, PMIP2 and CMIP (IPCC-AR4) intercomparison projects for past and future climate change simulations are examined in terms of polar temperature changes in comparison to global temperature changes and with respect to pre-industrial reference simulations. For the mid-Holocene (MH, 6,000 years ago), the models are forced by changes in th...

Global climate models: past, present, and future.

Introduction Global climate is a result of the complex interactions between the atmosphere, cryosphere (ice), hydrosphere (oceans), lithosphere (land), and biosphere (life), fueled by the non-uniform spatial distribution of incoming solar radiation. We know from climate reconstructions using recorders such as ice cores, ocean and lake sediment cores, tree rings, corals, cave deposits, and groun...

Transient Climate Simulations with the HadGEM1 Climate Model: Causes of Past Warming and Future Climate Change

The ability of climate models to simulate large-scale temperature changes during the twentieth century when they include both anthropogenic and natural forcings and their inability to account for warming over the last 50 yr when they exclude increasing greenhouse gas concentrations has been used as evidence for an anthropogenic influence on global warming. One criticism of the models used in ma...
